NASA Workshop

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Western Water Applications Office (WWAO) Rio Grande Basin Water Resources Stakeholder Engagement Workshop

OVERVIEW

NASA WWAO Long-term Goal: WWAO’s mission is to address important, pressing water resource problems in the western United States by increasing access to and use of NASA’s water-related data and capabilities. To do this, WWAO works with water resource stakeholders to understand their challenges and helps equip them with remote-sensing-based information that can either complement existing data sources or fill in knowledge gaps.

NASA WWAO Approach: WWAO takes a “needs-driven” approach to identify and address western water management decisions in which NASA’s unique capabilities can have an impact, by conducting Needs Assessments across the western U.S. river basins, which are composed of a characterization study and a workshop. Daniel B. Stephens & Associates, Inc. (DBS&A) is under contract with the NASA WWAO at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), in support of a Rio Grande Basin Needs Assessment. Last year, DBS&A conducted a survey of water managers in the Rio Grande Basin on behalf of the NASA WWAO.  Input from more than 20 water management entities in Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas was gathered and synthesized. Building on the results of the survey, the next step is to conduct a Needs Assessment Workshop.

Workshop Purpose: The purpose of this workshop is to bring Rio Grande Basin water resources managers and agricultural producers together to identify the basin’s priority information needs and current data gaps related to water resources management.  The information gathered from the workshop will be used to inform future NASA investments in developing satellite data applications that support water resources management in the Rio Grande Basin in Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas.

Workshop Breakdown: This will be a three-day virtual workshop.

  • Day 1 will focus on understanding and prioritizing the issues and needs of the water resources management community.
  • Day 2 will be composed of topical interactive breakout sessions where the water resources management community along with support from NASA remote sensing subject matter experts and our local water resources engineering partners at DBS&A will discuss and develop water resources use cases.
  • Day 3 will focus on reporting out on the breakout sessions from the day prior for a large group discussion.

In preparation for the virtual Workshop, NASA WWAO will also host a 1.5-hour pre-workshop Webinar on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 to introduce NASA WWAO and the Needs Assessment goals and process.

Workshop Expected Outcome: An end goal of the workshop is to inform the development and implementation of small projects within the Rio Grande Basin that address some of the high priority needs identified at the workshop.
